Reactivity:  This test system reacted with all isolates or strains of TMV tested. Reaction of the ELISA is moderately strong. Optical Density at 405_nm  is in a range of 1.100 - 1.600 depending on the virus titer in the samples tested.

Sensitivity:  Sensitivity of the ELISA is very high.  The virus can be consistently detected in infected plant leaf tissues diluted at 1:2430 - 1:7290.

Specificity:  This test does cross-react with tomato mosaic virus. There is no cross reaction with healthy plant tissues.  Background is  low on all of the negative control wells.

Application:  The test can be used to detect TMV in infected host plans.

Virus Infection:  Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) is a vary stable virus and infective plant virus, and easily spreads mechanically.  TMV is able to infect a broad range of plants including many economic crops such as tobacco, tomato, and potato. TMV also affects ornamental plants such as impatiens, chrysanthemums, geraniums, and African violets.
